Applicability of findings Our 1994 report of the 40 year findings concluded that Results from the first 20 years of this study, and of other studies at that time [the 1970s], substantially underestimated the hazards of long term use of tobacco.17 It now [in the 1990s] seems that about half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually be killed by their habit.
